Fellowship Program
Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care
Providing excellent critical care for infants, children, adolescents, as well as adults with congenital heart problems is a complex task that requires expertise in several disciplines including pediatric cardiology, pediatric critical care, and neonatal critical care medicine. Our Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, established in 2003, is among the very few units in the United States that provides training for experts in such a sub specialized field of medicine.
The CICU fellowship at Children's Hospital was initiated in 2005 and since then trained pediatric cardiac intensivists have taken leadership positions both nationally and internationally. In addition to clinical expertise, our CICU fellowship provides an unmatched environment for clinical and translational research with trainees reaching several publications and presenting in national meetings.
Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC’s Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Fellowship Program provides a comprehensive training program for fellows interested in leading the field of pediatric cardiac critical care. Educational opportunities are tailored to suit the needs and interests of each fellow. The CICU is staffed by four pediatric cardiac intensivists responsible for more than 700 admissions a year. We have three world renowned cardiac surgeons, an unparalleled artificial heart (ventricular assist device) and ECMO program and a heart-lung transplant program.
Our CICU fellowship program is integrated with other fellowships including pediatric cardiology, critical care medicine, neonatology and anesthesiology providing thus a broad range of interdisciplinary expertise and several research opportunities from the basic sciences to translational and clinical research. The program is currently funded for two fellows per year and individuals from the disciplines of pediatric cardiology, pediatric critical care medicine, anesthesiology and neonatology are eligible to apply.
Thank you for your interest in our pediatric CICU fellowship program. We hope we can help you in your search for the best education and training program to suit your needs.
