The Cherpes Lab – Infectious Diseases
|
Overview
The laboratory of Thomas L. Cherpes, MD investigates mucosal immunity. More specifically, it is focused on host-pathogen interactions in mucosal tissue and modulation of mucosal immunity by hormonal contraceptive (HC) use.
|
Feminization of the HIV pandemic demands improved understanding of risk factors promoting the transmission of HIV to women. While epidemiological studies suggest links between HC use and HIV acquisition, there is minimal understanding of the mechanisms responsible for this association.
We are conducting a longitudinal study that examines if HC use modulates host responses, enhancing acquisition of mucosal tissue infection (NIH Grant R01HD072663).
Our lab also explores mucosal tissue responses to Chlamydia trachomatis infection. In particular, we are interested in the effector function of Chlamydia-specific CD4+ helper T cells.
