Our Services

Inpatient Pediatric Rehabilitation

Description of Services

Our Clinical Mission

To optimize the health and functional outcomes of our patients through innovative, high-quality, transdisciplinary, comprehensive, family-centered rehabilitative care

We provide comprehensive pediatric inpatient rehabilitation care at Children's Hospital's newest inpatient unit: the Children's Hospital Rehabilitation Unit, or CHRU. The CHRU is located at The Children's Home, less than one mile from the main campus of Children's Hospital on Penn Avenue.

The CHRU:

  • Is an eight-bed pediatric inpatient unit
  • Is a Children's Hospital unit that operates under Children's policies and procedures

The goals of the CHRU are to:

  • Help pediatric patients recover physically and cognitively after illness, injury, or surgery
  • Promote independence and developmental skills that are age-appropriate
  • Help pediatric patients return to home, school, and the community
Intensive, coordinated transdisciplinary therapy services will help patients achieve these goals. At the CHRU, the patient and family are the center of the team and will be included in the development of the pediatric patient's rehabilitation goals. All team members, including the patient and family, are involved in planning for discharge — which begins the day of admission.

Who is a candidate for the CHRU?

Physicians should consider referring pediatric patients who have had a substantial decline in function, including those with:

  • Acquired brain injury
  • Amputation
  • Disabling neurological conditions
  • Medically and/or surgically complex conditions with weakness after a prolonged illness or hospitalization
  • Poly-trauma, or multiple trauma
  • Spinal cord injury

Any patient who is referred will be screened by the rehabilitation coordinator to determine whether he or she has the potential to participate in and benefit from a comprehensive pediatric rehabilitation program.
