Eustachian Tube Function as a Predictor of Myringoplasty/Tympanoplasty Outcome

Protocol Description

This study will show whether Eustachian tube function (ETF) testing can predict the success of surgery to close a hole in the eardrum after ear tubes are removed or have fallen out. Participants will have ETF tests done prior to the surgery and will be followed for up to 1 year to see whether the tests predict whether the eardrum will heal after surgery and whether fluid will collect in the middle ear.

Eligibility Criteria

Children of both genders, ages 3 to 16, who are scheduled to have repair of a hole in the eardrum after a tube has been removed or has fallen out are eligible and will be entered into the study within 8 weeks of the surgery.
Boys: Ages 3 to 16
Girls: Ages 3 to 16

Requirements
Study participants will have ETF testing done within 8 weeks of surgery. At approximately 6 months and 1 year after surgery, examinations will be done using otoscopy (looking at the ears) and tympanometry (a quick test using an ear-plug in the ear canal to see if the eardrum has healed or whether there is fluid in the ear).
Visits: 3, which can be done with scheduled ENT clinic visits
Duration: Up to 1 year
