Fetal and Perinatal Cardiology Program
Description of Services
Fetal cardiology provides evaluation and management of the fetal heart for anatomic abnormalities, rhythm problems, and cardiac problems that might arise from obstetric situations. This program, developed in 1988, is under the direction of Frederick Sherman, MD.
The Fetal Echocardiography Program provides the following comprehensive services:
- Diagnostic fetal echocardiograms
- Ultrasound examinations can be performed after 16 weeks’ gestation
- Abnormal heart anatomy and function
- Abnormal heart anatomy and function
- Ultrasound examinations can be performed after 16 weeks’ gestation
- Management and therapy
- Medical therapy can be instituted even before delivery of the baby
- Recommendations and plans regarding delivery of the baby are made to allow for the smoothest transition from fetal to neonatal life
- Parent/family counseling
- If any fetal problems beyond the heart are detected, consultation with the Fetal Diagnostic and Treatment Center at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center is available
- Referral to other specialists involved in many fields such as ultrasound, neonatology, urology, surgery, neurosurgery, high-risk obstetrics and genetics
Referral Requirements
Referrals are required from primary care physicians or other Children’s Hospital specialty services. Referrals for patients enrolled in managed care insurance plans also may require authorization from the insurance provider and primary care physician. All necessary referral and authorization forms must be received before the patient’s visit. For appointments, accurate provider numbers or more information, please call the office number listed.
