Barbara A. Gaines, MD
Director, Benedum Pediatric Trauma Program
Barbara A. Gaines, MD, is the director of the Benedum Trauma Program and a pediatric surgeon at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. She serves as clinical director of the Division of Pediatric General and Thoracic Surgery at Children's Hospital. She joined Children’s in 2000 and also is an associate professor of surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. In addition to her administrative responsibilities, she teaches medical students, pediatric surgery residents and pediatric surgery fellows in both the outpatient and inpatient settings. Dr. Gaines academic and community outreach interests include childhood injury prevention.
Children’s trauma program, which Dr. Gaines leads, is one of only 15 accredited pediatric trauma centers in the nation and the only one serving the western half of Pennsylvania. Children’s trauma program has a three-part approach to pediatric trauma, including providing specialized emergency medical care; research into the causes, frequency and outcomes of pediatric trauma; and the education of adults and children about injury prevention.
