Gastroenterology Fellowship

Overview

The Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine offers a three-year fellowship in an ACGME-accredited program that meets the requirements for subspecialty certification by the American Board of Pediatrics.

Our program mixes an excellent clinical experience with a broad spectrum of research opportunities to train fellows for a career in academic pediatric gastroenterology. The first year of fellowship is devoted to clinical training. Each fellow will have extensive experience in the diagnosis and management of both inpatient and outpatient pediatric gastrointestinal and liver disorders. We also provide complete training in procedures, including diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, excluding ERCP. In addition to these opportunities, experience in the care of liver and small bowel transplant patients will be provided. Along with informal bedside teaching, formal didactic sessions covering a variety of topics provide our fellows with a broad knowledge base in pediatric gastroenterology. Additional conferences attended by faculty and fellows include a Division Conference, a Pathology Conference, a Radiology Conference and a Journal Club.

During the second and third years, our fellows have ample opportunity to conduct research under the guidance of faculty in the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology or of appropriate faculty in the School of Medicine, including members of the adult Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. To provide a full and productive research experience, the clinical responsibilities of the second and third year fellows is minimal, primarily one half-day of outpatient clinic a week.
