Preventive Cardiology and Lipid Assessment/Cholesterol Screening

The goal of Preventive Cardiology is to identify and medically manage cholesterol and blood pressure problems early in life to help prevent heart attack or stroke later in life. Generally, lipids assessment, better known as cholesterol screening, is prescribed for children who have a family history of cardiovascular disease or are significantly overweight.

Lipids screening is done using a blood test. Children with may be screened to see if they have or are genetically at risk for several lipid disorders, including:

  • hypercholesterolemia—high cholesterol levels
  • hypertriglyceridemia—high triglyceride levels
  • hypertension—high blood pressure
  • other symptoms associated with diabetes or metabolic syndrome

Doctors at the lipids clinic work with a team of specialists from other disciplines, including endocrinology, nutrition, and weight management, who perform a comprehensive evaluation and make recommendations to treat these conditions. Recommendations may include cholesterol-lowering medications, dietary changes, exercise programs, and other lifestyle changes.
