Make a Referral

The Heart Institute at UPMC Children’s Hospital offers a variety of ways to make a referral, depending on your needs. Whether you have an emergency referral or would simply like to discuss a case, we welcome your calls. We are happy to see all children with suspected heart disease, including newborns, at all of our Heart Institute locations.

Cardiac Specialists or Urgent Outpatient Referrals

• For urgent calls related to immediate patient care, please call 412-692-5325 and ask for the cardiologist on call.
• For non-urgent calls for patient care during regular business hours, or to speak with a specific cardiologist, please call 412-692-5540.

Emergency/Inpatient Transfers and Transports

For inpatient transfers or life-threatening situations and transports of children of all ages and conditions, including ECMO patients:

• Call MedCall, our physician-to-physician resource for patient consultations and transfers, at 1-800-544-2500.
• For ECMO transfers from an outside facility to Children’s Hospital, call 1-877-PEDS-HRT (733-7478).

Elective Outpatient Referrals

For non-urgent patient appointments directed to a cardiologist specializing in your patient’s condition, call the Heart Institute Appointment Desk directly at 412-692-5540.

Cardiothoracic Surgery Consultations

For appointments and consultations with our cardiothoracic surgeons, Victor Morell, MD, call 412-692-5218.

Fetal (Prenatal) Heart Referrals and Consultations

For physician consultation or to refer a patient, contact the Perinatal Cardiology Program at 412-641-4107.

Adult Congenital Heart Disease Center Referrals and Consultations

To refer a patient or request a consultation with an adult congenital heart disease specialist, please call 412-692-5540.
