Job Shadowing

What is a Job Shadow?

A Job Shadow is an unpaid experience that allows a student to spend a short amount of time observing under the direct supervision of a Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC professional on the job. Most departments will only be able to accommodate one day of shadowing due to the amount of shadowing requests obtained. If an extended period of time is approved by the department, no longer than 1 to 2 weeks of observation time will be permitted. The student cannot perform work of any kind, including patient care, during this experience, but can broaden his or her understanding of a particular career through observation.

Students must be at least 16 years of age to be approved to shadow. Please note that some departments will not accept high school students for shadowing.

How do I apply for a Job Shadow?

If you are interested in a job shadow, please fill out the Shadow Intake Sheet (PDF) and either e-mail it to extern-shadow@chp.edu or fax it to 412-692-6994, Attention: Children's Shadowing Opportunity. A Human Resources representative will contact a department representative to determine if the department is able to accommodate your shadow request. Please be advised that not all shadow requests will be granted.

If the request is approved by the department, a Human Resources representative will contact you with some additional paperwork and requirements for you to complete and submit. Once all necessary paperwork and requirements have been submitted, we will put you in contact with the department to schedule a date and time for shadowing.

Shadowing opportunities for physicians, physician assistants, or nurse practitioners are arranged through the Physician Services Division. Please contact them at 412-647-2500 for more information.

If you have questions regarding job shadowing, please e-mail extern-shadow@chp.edu.
