Diagnostic Expertise
Finding the right diagnosis — no matter how rare.
The NDRD works collaboratively with the neuro imaging team to develop diagnostic and treatment protocols. At the Brain Care Institute’s pediatric neuroimaging department, we offer a range of testing options that help us to uncover even the most mysterious of neurological illnesses and conditions. Our advanced imaging technologies include:
- CT or CAT scan (computed tomography scans)
- Electroencephalogram (EEG)
- Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners
- Sodium MRI imaging
- Electromyogram (EMG) and nerve conduction velocity
- Positron emission tomography (PET) scan
- Magnetic resonance angiogram (MRA) scan
- Cerebral spinal fluid analysis (spinal tap or lumbar puncture)
- Brainstem Auditory Evoked potentials and visual evoked potentials
- Myelogram
- Ultrasound (sonogram)
- Neurosonogram
- Magnetoencephalogram (MEG)
- MR spectroscopy
- Diffusion tensor imaging and fiber tracking
- PET molecular imaging
The Neurodevelopment in Rare Disorders Training Program
The NDRD program provides multidisciplinary training in a variety of services for children and young adults with rare neurodegenerative genetic conditions where developmental, behavioral, and school problems are addressed.
Fellowship in Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics/Lysosomal Storage Disorders Track
Recipients of the Neurodevelopment in Rare Disorders (NDRD) Fellowship focus their clinical research activities in one of the disorders while receiving training in the broad area of children's learning and developmental disorders. This track was started in 2003 and has funded two fellows. Dr. Escolar's mentorship activities with fellows include a review of clinical cases three times per week, the development of a research project, and weekly conferences or journal club meetings.
The following pediatricians benefited from this training tract:
Dr. Holly Martin, 2004–07
Funded by the Trimpers Foundation
Dr. Karina Yelin, 2006–09
Funded by the Caterina Marcus Foundation
Multidisciplinary Training
In addition to fellowships in developmental and behavioral pediatrics, our program offers rotations for graduate and postdoctoral students in psychology, speech/language pathology, audiology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, nutrition, education, social work, biostatistics, and nursing. Such interdisciplinary emphasis provides a rich environment for fellows to learn about developmental and behavioral issues from many perspectives within a bio-psychosocial framework. Postdoctoral and graduate students have had the opportunity to develop their doctoral dissertations and research projects with the NDRD. Participants who have completed this program include four PhD candidates, one master’s level student, three medical students, and four undergraduate research associates.
