UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh is known for its outstanding clinical services, research programs, and medical education. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Children's Hospital, located on the 8th floor of the 10-acre medical and research campus in Pittsburgh's Lawrenceville neighborhood, is just one shining example. This Level IV NICU has 55-bed combined medical-surgical unit that provide breathtaking views of the Pittsburgh skyline while providing staff with the appropriate space and technology designed to care for newborns with the most complex surgical and medical conditions, including those infants requiring neonatal extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).

Neonatologists supervise around-the-clock care of these infants. A full complement of registered nurses, neonatal nurse practitioners, respiratory therapists, and support staff provide each infant with the care that is needed while hospitalized. On-site consultation and expertise is provided by pediatric medicine and pediatric surgery subspecialists. These subspecialists contribute to the management of sick neonates with complex medical conditions including multiple congenital anomalies, infants who require surgical procedures, including cardiac surgery, and those infants transferred for evaluation for organ transplantation.
Specialists in all fields of pediatrics and pediatric surgery work together in multidisciplinary teams to provide the best possible care for each patient. UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh embraces the philosophy of family-centered care and focuses on the needs of the entire family as well as the developmental needs of the infant.

UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital is the region's premier provider of obstetric and neonatal care with more than 10,000 births occurring each year. The hospital also serves as the regional referral center for high-risk maternal care and fetal therapy, providing physicians and hospitals with access to the highest level of resources. Specialists in neonatology, pediatrics, surgery, genetics, ultrasound, and maternal-fetal medicine work together in multidisciplinary teams to provide the best possible care for each patient.
The Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Magee-Womens treats more than 1,700 critically ill newborns annually. An attending neonatologist is present in the NICU at all times in order to supervise patient care. The NICU is equipped with a total of 77 beds, including 48 private rooms. These private rooms enable the NICU to fully embrace Magee's family-centered care philosophy and allow families to participate in the many aspects of their child's care.

The UPMC Hamot Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), located in the UPMC Hamot Women's Hospital, is a 24-bed Level III facility that serves the specialized needs of high-risk infants. The NICU staff focuses on delivering a high level of clinical expertise in a family-centered and developmentally sensitive atmosphere. Antenatal and neonatal transport services, high-frequency ventilation and inhaled nitric oxide therapies are all available at this location. Infants requiring pediatric subspecialty evaluation or pediatric surgical treatment are transported from here to UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. The NICU at UPMC Hamot is an active member of the Vermont Oxford Neonatal Network and has recently developed a Neonatal Developmental Follow-up Program. Premature babies, as well as babies with intensive medical problems, are cared for 24 hours a day by neonatologists, neonatal nurse practitioners, and registered nurses.

The Children's Home of Pittsburgh was founded in 1984 as Transitional Infant Care Hospital, or TIC. This special infant program was designed to help parents of babies who were born premature or with medical conditions that necessitated a stay in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The Children's Home of Pittsburgh also offers special programs for parents of full-term infants who may be receiving intravenous antibiotics or weaning from medications that make hospitalization necessary but that don’t require a prolonged stay in a NICU. The Children's Home also offers special services for babies receiving hospice care. All parents and siblings are welcome to stay overnight and to fully participate in the care of their infant and utilize all the services that The Children's Home of Pittsburgh offers.
