Our Services

A unified team approach to brain care.

The Brain Care Institute’s Neuro-Oncology Program is committed to improving the survival rate for children who have tumors of the brain and/or spinal cord through state-of-the-art, research-based care.

Through collaboration and research we seek the optimal solution for each and every child. All treatment decisions are discussed at the Neuro-Oncology Tumor Board by a team of subspecialists with expertise in childhood brain tumors, including staff from pediatric neurosurgery, radiation oncology, pediatric neuro-oncology, and neuroradiology.

The Pediatric Neuro-Oncology Program is a long-time member of the Children’s Oncology Group (COG) and the Pediatric Brain Tumor Consortium (PBTC), a select group of pediatric hospitals that is committed to both identifying and evaluating novel treatments in pediatric neuro-oncology care. These partnerships and associations not only keep us at the forefront of brain cancer research, but also give our patients the opportunity to participate in clinical trials while benefitting from the newest treatments.

A leading site for clinical studies.

As one of the leading sites in the United States for pediatric cancer clinical studies, the Children’s Neuro-Oncology Program has received significant funding from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke, the National Brain Tumor Society, and the Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation. This funding enables us to develop leading-edge treatment strategies for numerous types of brain tumors, including gliomas. Our ability to take these treatment strategies from the laboratory to clinical trials is having a powerful impact on the quality of life of our patients.

A full spectrum of care.

The Neuro-Oncology Program within the Brain Care Institute is committed to the total well-being of both children and families. We provide a complete health care team of counselors, nurses, behavioral health specialists, and social workers to offer a full spectrum of care — from diagnosis and treatment to follow-up visits. This is what makes the Brain Care Institute at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC a special place of healing and hope.
