Careers in Neurodiagnostics (EEG and EMU)

The Department of Neurodiagnostics (EEG and EMU) provides consultation and services related to the identification, assessment and management of neurological disorders and seizures for children. Our neurodiagnostics department is comprised of two centers for excellence, the Children’s Hospital Epilepsy Center and the Electroencephalography (EEG) Laboratory.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is performed on patients during both awake and sleep states with a testing duration of one to one-and-a-half hours. More prolonged EEGs can be done extending to four, eight, 12 or 24 hours. Facilities are available for CCTV video EEG monitoring at the patient’s bedside.

The Epilepsy Center is a nationally recognized joint effort of Children’s Hospital and the University of Pittsburgh Epilepsy Center. Together, a multidisciplinary team of medical professionals from the departments of Child Neurology, Neurosurgery, Adult Neurology, Neuro-Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, and Neurophysiology provide high-quality care for children with all types of seizures and seizure disorders.

In addition, Children’s Epilepsy Center is the only center in the region that provides comprehensive evaluation and surgical treatment options for children with hard-to-manage epilepsy. The Epilepsy Center provides its patients with technologically advanced neuro-imaging resources, including the latest generation magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners, single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), positron emission tomography (PET), magnetoenchephalography (MEG), magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and eight digital video electroencephalography (VEEG) monitoring suites. With these resources, Children’s neurologists and neurosurgeons strive to identify the specific site in a patient’s brain that is generating seizures, determine its role in particular brain functions, and perform an excision of the seizure focus that maximally preserves or even enhances the patient’s level of function.

Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC is sure to transform the lives of all those who pass through our doors. Whether this is your first experience in the Neurodiagnostics field or if you want to make an impact on a child’s life, a position at Children’s Hospital may be right for you.
