The Division of Child Neurology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine is affiliated with both the Departments of Pediatrics and Neurology. The child neurology program accepts three child neurology residents each year for a three-year training program that leads to board eligibility in neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, with special competence in Child Neurology. For candidates who are applying for admission to the categorical Pediatrics residency as well as child neurology residency, we are pleased to offer a five-year joint program, with an integrated interview and selection process.

First Year

The first year of neurology training starts with three weeks of didactic training in neurology and continues with a mix of the following:

  • Seven months of ward, consult, stroke, VA, EMU and nightfloat service
  • Two months of research elective
  • Six weeks of clinical elective
  • Four weeks of vacation

Years 2 and 3

Years 2 and 3 of the child neurology training consist of 12 months of clinical child neurology and 12 months of electives including mandatory rotations on child psychiatry and pediatric neurosurgery. Additional electives include:

  • EEG
  • EMG
  • Neuroradiology
  • Physical medicine and rehabilitation

An international rotation can be arranged.  A mandatory weekly continuity clinic affords each resident mentored responsibility in the care of his or her outpatients.  Please see a sample schedule to learn more about the clinical rotations and available electives.

The resident staff actively participates in outpatient and inpatient care.  Daily service and consultative rounds are conducted at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC.  The Division of Child Neurology provides consultative services not only within Children’s Hospital, but to Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic and Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC's neonatal nursery as well.
