Pediatric Dentistry Residency Program

The two-year Pediatric Dentistry Residency Program at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC accepts four (4) residents each year. The program is oriented toward clinical training with exposure to both well and medically compromised children up to the age of 18 years. At the completion of the 24-month program, a certificate of training in Pediatric Dentistry is granted. The program is fully accredited by the American Dental Associated Council on Dental Education as a specialty program in Pediatric Dentistry.

All aspects of Pediatric Dentistry are included in the program, but there is an emphasis on hospital dentistry with extensive exposure to medically compromised pediatric patients. Children Hospital is also a level one trauma center, which allows the resident to participate in the management of complicated, as well as routine, oral cavity trauma management.

Scheduled teaching conferences include Hospital Dental Rounds, Journal Club, core topic seminars, and numerous conferences offered by the Department of Pediatrics and other subspecialty hospital services.

Residents gain experience by scheduled rotations in anesthesia, emergency medicine, pediatrics, and other subspecialty divisions. A scholarly project of the resident's choosing, under faculty supervision, is completed during the two years. Limited predoctorate dental teaching experience is achieved during the senior year. The time commitment is limited to one clinic session, once a week, for one semester.

Benefits for Pediatric Dental Training Program

Health insurance is provided through UPMC. Each resident is given two weeks' vacation annually. Limited funds are available for professional meeting travel expenses in the senior year.

Health Insurance: The health insurance plan for the trainee and eligible dependent(s).
Vacation: Two weeks per year, with requests subject to approval by the Chief of Service.
Parking: Available on a lease basis.
Life Insurance: Life insurance is provided in the amount $1000 above the annual stipend and includes Accidental Death and Dismemberment.
Disability Insurance: Paid short-term disability up to 12 weeks complete disability if provided. Proof of disability and evidence of physician continued care is required. Long-term provisions are also provided with further restrictions.
Professional Liability Insurance: The hospital provides coverage at state mandated levels underwritten by the Tri-Century Insurance Co.
Meal Tickets: Meal tickets are provided.

Our New Hospital Campus

Children’s Hospital opened its new facility on a 1.2 million sq. ft. campus in the Lawrenceville section of Pittsburgh. The dental clinic is an integral part of the new hospital structure and opened in April 2009. Learn more about our new campus.

Application Process

The Pediatric Dentistry Program participates in the National MATCH and PASS. In addition, supplemental material is required including a 2"x2" passport-style applicant photograph and a letter of recommendation from the applicant's academic Chair in Pediatric Dentistry or the Director of Undergraduate Pediatric Dental education. A dental school and undergraduate college activity transcripts are also required. The letters and transcripts may be part of the PASS application. The deadline for application is October 1st.

Once an interview invitation has been offered, the residency coordinator will call the applicant and schedule the interview date. A personal interview is mandatory and is scheduled at the hospital in the fall prior to the starting date.
