Pediatric Environmental Medicine Center

Description of Services

The Pediatric Environmental Medicine Center (PEMC) at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC is dedicated to improving awareness and reducing the burden of childhood asthma through research and education. As part of this effort, a multidisciplinary team of top pediatric experts at the center is studying the effect of environmental and lifestyle exposures such as vitamin D insufficiency, obesity, and indoor pollutants on the development of asthma in children in western Pennsylvania. Future efforts will focus on the development of novel treatments.

The center also provides education related to the prevention and the appropriate treatment of asthma, targeting local communities where rates are disproportionately high.

Services offered by the PEMC include:

Educational programs
Community outreach programs and screenings
Clinical research programs
Basic research to investigate the impact of environmental/lifestyle factors on children
Continuing Medical Education and training courses for healthcare providers
