Dear Resident Applicant,
Thank you for considering the Pediatric Residency Program at Children’s
David H. Perlmutter, MD Physician-in-Chief and Scientific Director |
Dena Hofkosh, MD Director, Pediatric Residency Program Professor of Pediatrics |
Distinguishing Features
The program has a long, rich history and several distinguishing features. First, because training of residents is considered one of the program’s most important activities by Children’s faculty and staff, residents receive special and highly individualized attention. Residents are exposed to role models who have been successful in academic pediatrics and often develop mentoring relationships with one or more of our faculty members. In particular, the Diagnostic Referral Group led by Basil Zitelli, MD, and including 14 gifted clinical educators devoted to teaching inpatient pediatric medicine (see photo above) and the Division of General Academic Pediatrics led by Alejandro Hoberman, MD, (see photo above) play a major role in residency education and supervision.

Second, the clinical experience is extensive and challenging. We are the only children’s hospital in western Pennsylvania; moreover, Children’s represents the only substantive pediatric subspecialty presence in the region. This means that Children’s is the only destination for children with serious illness and, therefore, our residents and fellows take part in an extraordinary breadth of pediatric medical problems.
Third, Children’s takes pride in the collegial relationships among the faculty and staff and a unique esprit de corps within the house staff. Three chief residents play a key role as liaisons between house staff and our full-time faculty.
Excellent Reputation
Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC enjoys an excellent reputation for patient care and postgraduate teaching in a variety of disciplines that extend beyond pediatrics. Its research program also continues to grow. The hospital is ranked eighth among independent children’s hospitals for the amount of funding it receives from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
