One of America's Best Children's Hospitals
Children's Hospital is Named 3 Years in a Row to U.S. News & World Report's Honor Roll of America's Best Children's Hospitals
Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC for the third straight year has been named to U.S. News & World Report's Honor Roll of America's "Best Children's Hospitals."
Children’s Hospital is ranked in 9 of the 10 pediatric specialties for the survey's 2012-13 Best Children’s Hospitals list. Children's ranked in the following pediatric specialties:
- cancer
- diabetes and endocrinology
- gastroenterology
- heart and heart surgery
- kidney
- neonatology
- neurology and neurosurgery
- pulmonology
- urology
Children’s ranked in the top 10 in four of the specialties: diabetes and endocrinology, 6th; gastroenterology, 6th; neonatology, 8th; and urology, 10th.

Our inclusion in the rankings of the various specialties speaks to the breadth and depth of our programs, and to the expertise and commitment of our physicians and employees,” said Christopher Gessner, president, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. “Ultimately, recognition such as this speaks to the dedication our team has to the patients and families we serve from all over the world.”

Noteworthy Accomplishments
Over the past year, Children’s has received many accolades for our groundbreaking medical care and focus on patient safety, as well as innovations in information technology:
- Children's Hospital achieved prestigious Magnet® recognition, granted by the American Nurses Credentialing Center to only 6 percent of hosptials nationwide.
- Children's was named one of the world's most beautiful hospitals in 2012 by HealthExecNews.com
- Children's website ranked among the top 25 hospital websites in the nation in a 2012 study by the Journal of Healthcare Management, Jan./Feb. 2012, Vol 57, No. 1.
- Children’s became the first pediatric hospital in the United States to achieve a Stage 7 Award from HIMSS Analytics for achieving a virtually paperless patient record environment and the most comprehensive use of EMRs.
- Children’s was recognized by KLAS, an independent health care research organization, as the leader in its use of health care information technology among pediatric hospitals in the United States.
- Children’s was honored with an “Excellence in Life Support Award” from the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO), an international consortium of centers offering Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) for support of failing organ systems in infants, children and adults.
