The new Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC incorporates an unprecedented level of technology that will improve patient care, reduce human error, and improve patient, visitor and staff safety while providing operating efficiencies to manage costs effectively.

Our hospital will be among the first fully digital hospitals in the country and will lead us into the future by utilizing the following:

Infrastructure Services

  • Campus-wide wireless data network to enable access to electronic health records, prescription writing and other clinical and non-clinical applications
  • Power service that cannot be interrupted
  • 100 percent availability to Internet service
  • Secure access to the network from anywhere in the world

Telecommunications Services

  • Campus wide wireless phone system
  • Soft Phones
  • Centralized Call Center for billing inquiries, staff scheduling, patient inquiries, and more
  • Cell phone friendly campus

Applications and Equipment

  • Emergency Department and house-wide Patient Tracking and Child Abduction System
  • Provider (nurse) Call (inpatient and outpatient) integrated with patient equipment, monitors and patient and family communications. Calls will go directly to care provider wireless phones to facilitate a more timely response.
  • Centralized electronic record storage and retrieval
  • Campus-wide paperless record management system for order entry and distribution, results reporting, imaging, and more
  • Online access to all images for diagnostic purposes from anywhere on the campus (radiology, cardiology, neurology, and others)
  • Campus-wide document imaging system will be available house-wide
  • Automated medication and department-based supply control and dispensing systems will be available in all clinical locations
  • Visitor tracking system with status, alerts and locally and centrally monitored video (real time and stored)
  • Videoconferencing - desktop and auditorium based to support continuing medical education, grand rounds, patient and clinician consultation and patient education
  • Delivery of patient education on demand at the bedside
  • All bedsides, lounges and waiting rooms equipped with entertainment systems including cable television (with VCR and DVD players) and video game systems
  • Pneumatic Tube service for quick delivery of information
  • Virtual library for patient/family health information
  • Electronic kiosks will be located throughout the campus to provide patient/family information, visitor and employee information, organizational information and to collect appropriate information
