Pet Friend Volunteer Program

The Pet Friends Volunteer Program is an extraordinary program designed to bring the comfort and support of very special dogs and their owners to hospitalized children. Contact between children and Pet Friends can range from simply watching a dog, to petting, cuddling, or even helping the handler walk the dog.

All dogs have received a series of screenings and evaluations to become an approved Pet Friends volunteer. Dog handlers must complete the separate process to become a Hospital Program volunteer. Dogs and their handlers act as a team and together work with members of our Child Life staff to coordinate visits to hospitalized children.

If your child is a patient at Children’s and you would like to coordinate a visit, contact our Child Life Department at 412-692-5022.

After further evaluation of the Pet Friends program, our schedule and roster is full. At this time, we will not be bringing any new dogs for evaluations in the next six months.

If you are still interested in having your dog evaluated to be a part of our program when openings are available, feel free to check this page after October 2018, as we plan to provide updates as well as a formalized process and inquiry form for all new Pet Friend volunteer applicants at that time.
