Teen Volunteer Program

The Teen Volunteer Program is a rewarding experience that provides a special opportunity for teens who are interested in gaining experience in a pediatric health care environment.

Because of the sensitive nature of the pediatric hospital environment, we only offer opportunities for teens ages 15-17.

Teens that are accepted into the program are placed in a variety of areas throughout the hospital under supervision of UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh staff.

Teen Volunteer Requirements

  • Teens must be between 15 and 17 years of age.
  • Commit to a weekly schedule of 3 to 4 hours of service for a minimum of eight weeks between June and August. A limited number of teens may qualify to volunteer during the school year.
  • Teens that have already volunteered in the summer program will be selected for school year assignments based on merit and availability.
  • Complete the online application, two reference forms, and (new) a teen applicant survey during the open enrollment period between March 1 and early April (new teen applicants only).  Please note, the deadline has passed, and we will not accept any additional applications.
  • Attend the mandatory New Teen Volunteer Orientation prior to start date.
  • Returning teens are required to complete an Annual Retraining review and test.
  • Complete Immunization Requirements prior to start date (More information will be emailed to candidates who are offered assignments in a special acceptance packet):
    • An updated TB test.
    • Record of Tdap vaccination in the past 10 years.
    • Any additional required paperwork you receive.

Returning Teens

If you have met the minimum requirements the previous summer, you will be contacted early in the calendar year to invite you back to the program.

You will need to complete the Returning Teen Volunteer Form.

If you have not received your form, contact us at 412-692-5185 or volunteercoordinator@chp.edu to have one emailed to you.

In addition to completing this paperwork, you are also required to:

  • Submit paperwork for annual TB test prior to expiration date of previous year's test result.
  • Turn in updated Tdap documentation.
  • Complete the Annual Retraining review and test.

If you have returned all the required information, you will receive your schedule and assignment information by early April. You will be eligible to begin once you set up your start date with a Volunteer Coordinator.

Apply for the Teen Volunteer Program at UPMC Children's

The Teen Volunteer Program is very popular and often has more applicants than available openings.

We encourage teen applicants to submit their applications early and be thoughtful in the completion of all application materials.

Due to a large number of applications and many teens that return to the program from previous years, there are usually limited openings each year.

We received a very large volume of applications for this year's program and will not be able to accept any more applications as the deadline (April 5) has passed.

You will be notified of your application status by the last week of April.
