Carl Bates, MD, has had a career as a clinical pediatric nephrologist and basic research scientist for over 15 years. Dr. Bates received a bachelor of science degree in Chemistry and Life Sciences from Otterbein University and his medical degree at the Ohio State University. He completed residency training in pediatrics at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and specialty training in pediatric nephrology at the University of Texas, Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. He was then on the faculty at Nationwide Children’s Hospital/ the Ohio State University for 9 years.
Dr. Bates was recruited to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 2008, where he is currently Professor of Pediatrics, Cell Biology and Developmental Biology; Vice Chair of Basic Research in Pediatrics, Division Chief of Pediatric Nephrology; and co-Director of the Pediatric Nephrology Fellowship Training Program.
In addition to caring for children with pediatric kidney disease for many years, Dr. Bates has had an internationally-recognized research program focused on genetic regulation of kidney and bladder development, with more than 15 years of continuous funding by the National Institutes of Health. His mouse models of kidney and bladder disease have helped us understand many of the structural kidney and bladder birth defects seen in children, which make up the most frequent causes of kidney disease in children.
His contributions as a clinician-scientist were recognized by his induction into the very prestigious American Society of Clinical Investigation in 2014. He is also asked to seminars about his research program at several Universities across the United States on a regular basis. He has directly mentored several basic and clinician-scientists who have gone on the successful careers in academic research. He has also held many prestigious international positions, including Councilor for the International Pediatric Nephrology Association the Chair of the Organizing Committee for the International Workshop on Developmental Nephrology.
