Catherine M. Walsh Vockley, MS, CGC, joined Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC's Division of Medical Genetics as senior genetic counselor in 2004, bringing extensive experience in clinical genetics and education. Her work outside Children’s Hospital of Pittsurgh of UPMC includes serving as the coordinator of Education, Referral and Advocacy for the National Niemann-Pick Disease Foundation.
She is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in molecular and cellular biology in 1979. She received her master’s degree in human genetics and genetic counseling in 1986 from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.
Her clinical interests include genetic counseling for inborn errors of metabolism and hereditary cancer disorders. She has participated in several studies, including recent research that examines coping mechanisms and risk perception among high risk cancer families. Her interests also include genetic education and the ethical implications of clinical genetics and genetic testing.
Prior to joining Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, she was a genetic counselor at the Mayo Clinic Department of Medical Genetics from 1991 to 2003. From 1988 to 1991, she was as a genetic counselor at Yale University Pediatric Genetics/Metabolic Clinic, DNA Diagnostic Laboratory and the Prenatal Genetics Unit, and was coordinator of the Yale Regional Genetic Counseling Program. She had also served as coordinator of the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center’s Colorado Regional Genetics Clinic. As an educator, her experience includes teaching at Mayo Medical School, where she was assistant professor of medical genetics, and at Yale University School of Medicine, where she was an instructor. Her work in medical ethics includes a current position on the Ethics Subcommittee of the National Society of Genetic Counselors and a previous position on the Mayo Clinic Institutional Review Board DNA results committee.
She is certified by the American Board of Medical Genetics as a genetic counselor and is a member of a number of professional societies, including the American Society of Human Genetics and the National Society of Genetic Counselors.
