Tim Ward, MD, was born and raised in Pittsburgh, attending Catholic grade and high school in the Knoxville section of Pittsburgh. He spent 2 years in college at Penn State University followed by medical school at the University of Pittsburgh. He considers J. Leonard Goldner, MD, former chief of orthopaedic surgery at Duke University Medical Center, to be his most important professional mentor and role model. Dr. Ward has recently completed a fellowship in adult spinal surgery and has primarily restricted his current clinical practice to pediatric and adult spinal surgery, although he continues to consult and treat selected pediatric hip and foot disorders.
Dr. Ward has been married since 1979 to Bobette Ward, MD, herself a physician specializing in geriatric medicine. Tim and Bobette live in the Squirrel Hill section of Pittsburgh and are the parents of six children. Dr. Tim Ward spends his non- working hours attending various sporting activities that his children are involved in and maintaining an interest in personal fitness and political science.

The doctor came in, didn't directly speak to me (only spoke to the intern with him), answered one question and was out within minute. I waited 40 minutes in the exam room with my 2 year old.
Dr.Ward rushed in the room,and never took time to introduce himself. Sat down halfway on the seat asking us questions very abruptly. Walked out of the room twice mid-sentence to talk on his cell phone. Never washed his hands before examing my daughter! He did not even explain things to her in a kid friendly manner or speak with her. Isn't that part of being a pediatric doctor to be great with communicating with kids? He just seemed very "matter of fact" with no interest in our concerns. Very disappointed with his bedside manner!
Horrible bedside manner. He did not seem to care what my child was going through. I remembered that I had seen him in the past with my oldest child, he told her that there was nothing wrong. We switched providers and yes.....she did indeed have a completely torn labrum. I feel we may be doing the same again. This is unfortunate for the children and the reputation of the hospital!
I just felt that my daughters finger break was downplayed. She is not even 2 yet and I felt that I wasn't listened to. They told me to tape her fingers for two weeks but I'm lucky if I can get her to let me do that at all.

Dr. Ward is excellent. He is in the room within a couple minutes of us getting placed. He explains everything so we understand.
Dr. Ward did not listen to our concerns. He was abrupt and dismissive even when my daughter expressed that she felt there was something wrong. At her last visit, 6 months ago, he stated that she was done growing and that her condition, being the curvature of her spine, would not progress. He was wrong on both accounts and did not even acknowledge such, he simply stated that he was sure she wouldn't grow or progress anymore and that we were to return in 9 months to be discharged. The state of her condition now is worse than when we first went to Dr.Ward for treatment and he has proceeded to do nothing about it. We will be seeking a second opinion.
Dr Ward was able to explain the often uncertain nature of adolescent back pain. We appreciate that he wanted to get additional imaging to rule out a more serious injury before clearing our son to return to sports, etc. His assessment and recommendations made sense to all of us.

I had questions. I tried to ask. The dr was not interested in answering my questions. One question in particular was going to be to ask if he needs some sort of vitamin or mineral to help him, because my son broke his other wrist last August, but he never gave me the opportunity. He cut me iff before I could even finish my question by saying its football; people get rolled on. I think if this dr doesn't want to answer parent's questions, maybe he shouldn't be in pediatric orthopedics. I think it would go far for this dr to realize when he walks into a room the patient in that room is the most important patient to everyone in that room and he should feel the same. Thank you.
I love Dr. Ward! Because of him and the outcome of my spinal surgery 6 years ago I can do everything I love doing!
great visit with doctor, resident and nurse. scheduling clerk was pretty abrupt with answers to our scheduling questions; somewhat harsh.

Dr. Ward was great with my son.
He didn't know the reason behind the visit or her medical history. When I tried to explain it he wasn't listening and just seemed like he had somewhere else to be. Rushed out of the room after we waited over an hour to see him and drove 2 hrs just to get to the appointment.

He did not answer the questions we had in office, he walked out of the room and said that our child was fine and our PCP was over cautious. his nurse and staffing at the front desk were wonderful, him, his bedside manner could be a little better especially with a two month old baby. he seems very knowledgeable but is not the nicest provider my family and I have met. he told us he disagreed with us being there as our child was fine, if our PCP thought everything was fine they never would have sent us to your facility.

Dr. Ward is known to be a spectacular surgeon and this is the only reason I continue to have my daughter see him. He has a terrible bed-side manner and does not listen to my concerns or bother to answer my questions. He also does not seem to be keeping up with the most recent advances in bracing for scoliosis (really, still recommending the Charleston brace???).
we were kept waiting an hour before going into the clinic and no-one told us the doctor was in surgery. I had to ask what was going on. once back in the room we waited another 20 minutes. I made an effort to be ontime but nobody cared.

My Child and I felt very disregarded by Dr.Ward. my child was in severe pain and it was not acknowledge. Dr.Ward staff appeared to be on edge when he was around and it was very uncomfortable. My son ended up in the emergency room at Children's 6 hours later. We never met any of the other doctors in his practice but we will be going to them for follow up appointments. I can not believe this man works with children. Very disappointed in Children's Hospital and we would go to another provided, except no other orthopedic surgeon will see my child because they did not do the work. Very frustrating. I hope my child never breaks a bone again, but if he does we will never go back to children's ortho department. Since Dr.Ward is the department chair he controls all of the department.
Dr. Ward and his staff have provided excellent care for our daughter. She has been seeing him for 11 years due to scoliosis and we are so grateful to him.
The doctor had a rude attitude
This was an orthopedic follow up appt 1week after her bicycle accident resulting in a broken great toe. We were provided care by the local EMS as the Urgent Care Center had closed & her injuries did not warrant an ER visit. We we're out of state on vacation during the incident. My main concern was based on my daughter's history whereas it took about 7 months for her Left foot fracture to heal 2 1/2 years ago & we were very pleased with her care at Children's Hospital during that incident therefore we immediately called to set up her follow up appt again at Children's Hospital.
I am very pleased with the care provided by Dr Ward. I have no complaints.
Love Dr. Ward! He has taken care of my three girls for scoliosis and all had spinal fusions. Would definitely recommend him to anyone who was diagnosed with scoliosis. My girls are very comfortable with him and they all feel the same way I do.

We were very surprised to get in and out of the office so fast. The Doctor and staff is always kind and prompt. The facility is clean and we have no complaints.

I was EXTREMELY disappointed in our visit with Dr Ward. He was running almost an hour behind schedule. I had taken off work early and gotten my daughter out early from school to get to this appointment. Dr Ward had no respect of our time. He fly in the room very quickly and almost seemed annoyed that we were there. He was very short with us and didn't even really take time to try to figure out what was wrong with my daughter.
Dr. Ward has been great to me and my daughter. Not only does she him or her scoliosis but he also took care of her when she broke her ankle and need surgery to repair it.

He explained her condition and the treatment method needed in a way which was helpful and accurate. Highly competent. Knowledgeable practitioner.

DR WARD WAS VERY ATTENTIVE TO MY CHILD'S NEEDS. HE ANSWERED ALL OUR QUESTIONS REGARDING MY CHILD'S CONDITION. I AM VERY SATISFIED WITH THE OUTCOME OF THE VISIT.
Dr Ward was absolutely no help and told me the crippling pain that I've been experiencing probably doesn't have an actual cause and would just go away eventually. I don't have "eventually" as I am in college for dance (which I told him), I need concrete answers and treatment or action taken to find concrete answers. I did not feel listened to and the entire appointment turned out to be a waste of time due to his apathy. I will not be coming back.
Dr Ward was unprofessional, rushed and uncaring. He didn't think that my daughter's problem should have been referred to him and made it clear to us that we were wasting his time. He was condescending and did not help us at all.
He seemed biased and short with me regarding questions I had. He had a loud way of speaking and was very terse. Not a friendly person. He was very clear on explaining the diagnosis but rather rude about it.
I think this provider is not open to listening to patients and dismisses questions because he's been practicing so long. I felt extremely rushed and concerns dismissed as no big deal. No offer of ideas for possible pain relief.

I have been a patient of Dr Ward's for over 20 years and he is by far the best doctor I have ever seen. He explains things in a way for his patients to understand and always does so in a kind, caring manner.

Dr. Ward had her old films and told us her spine shouldn't change much, if at all, and released her from care. When we pointed out that he wasn't looking at the new films, the nurse brought him back to look at the new ones and he was gracious about that. However, her spine changed what I thought was a significant amount, but he didn't seem concerned. But instead of releasing her as he did after looking at the old films, he'll see her in a year. I'm fine with that.
Dr. Ward seemed knowledgeable. I did feel uneasy because he questioned us like we were wasting his time. I brought my child to Children's do to the advice from a doctor at Frick hospital. He was seen at Frick for a totally unrelated problem. They noticed an anomaly on his x-ray and recommended it be looked at. When it comes to my children I just want to be sure they are well taken care of and if it is recommended they see a specialist I follow thru on that advice. I am not a doctor don't pretend to be and rely on them to keep my children healthy.

Dr Ward is a great surgeon. He did my surgery when I was 13 years old for scoliosis and I have had 3 children with no problems at all and a great life. The only thing I would say is he can be rough around the edges at times which comes off as insensitive or rude.

the experience we had was that Dr Ward didn't have a very good bedside manner st all ..he was not compassionate at all with my child fear ..she was visably upset and he said nothing to try and calm her fears at all other then told me to speak to her anistelodgist about her fears of needles ..I understand he does see many children but he needs to take time to at least help calm the fears especially with a teenager that already has anxiety ..

Dr Ward and his entire staff are excellent. Nothing bad to say about them. He is very knowledgeable and I trust his opinion 100%. Staff is friendly as well.
Dr Ward needs some people skills. He was cruel in the way he treated my son with special needs. the whole experience was a nightmare. He never touched my son. Barely looked at his medical records until I asked him. Talked down at him. He showed no compassion and acted as if we were bothering him by by taking up his time.
I had as appointment at 3:00 and did not see the doctor until4:30. Unacceptable
Dr. Ward is excellent! Very busy because he is very good. He answers all questions in a clear and concise way and takes care of issues right away. He makes difficult decisions quickly and I feel very comfortable in his care. I have read negative comments about his bedside manner, but I did not find that to be the case at all. He is just focused on making difficult decisions quickly and helping our little ones get the care they need as quickly as possible. I actually respected his approach and feel comfortable in his care. We got answers right away.
Our appt was a 110pm and we were not seen until around 215pm. My son fractured his tibia 9 days prior and we were to follow up in 5-7 days. Not only did we wait a long time, but when we went in, we were literally seen for 2 min for the doctor to pull up the xray and say these injuries usually take 4 weeks to heal so he will see us in 3 weeks to remove the cast. He briefly looked at my son's toes but that was the extent of the visit. The doctor was friendly, but the visit seemed like a waste of time for all parties involved.
Our family had never been to Children's before. I was given excellent instructions on how to get there and where to park. We knew exactly where to go when we arrived. We never waited more than a few minutes before we were helped to the next step of our appointment. Everyone involved was very friendly and professional. This appointment was among the best hospital experiences that I have ever had with my family.
Dr. Ward was excellent with the treating of my son's broken femur. He is strait and to the point, works quickly and efficiently, but takes time to explain what is going on and what is going to happen.
I was not impressed at all. my child has a broken wrist and we were told from the emergency department to follow up in one week for another X-ray and to make sure the cast was okay. the provider looked at the old X-ray said it would heal fine and asked if he was doing ok handling the cast. the provider never rexrayed or looked at the cast. also he never asked if I had any concerns or questions just got up and walked out of the room saying see you in 4 weeks. I was very disgusted that we traveled almost two hours to not even be rechecked. when I mentioned the X-ray I did not get an answer.
Dr. Ward is an amazing doctor. He always meets our expectations, and I would recommend him to anybody looking for an orthopedic doctor.
The doctor just told us he could only diagnose 20% of back pain and just pretty much said live with it or try acupuncture, chiropractor etc. There were no explanations or even trying to figure things out. I mentioned her ribs being uneven. He never even asked her to see them.
The wait was long for an anxious child, but we understood as we were the last appointment of the day. The Dr. was terrific and really set our child's and our minds at ease with her problem and was very patient with our questions. Highly recommended. The receptionist staff was gone when we came at 4:00 for a 4:15 appointment. Our files did not get transferred to the doctor and this caused delays.
Dr. Ward did an awesome job on my 11 year old daughters spinal fusion. When I first found out she had scoliosis, I was nervous wreck. I was referred to Dr. Ward by her Pediatrician. I, of course, did research prior to the appointment and was a little apprehensive after reading some of the comments. First, We never waited longer than 5 minutes to be called back to a room. Everything was extremely efficient and organized. Dr. Ward is an expert in his field and I couldn't be happier with the results of the surgery. The recovery was amazing the incision was done beautifully. I have seen other patients complaining about Dr. Ward's bedside manor. He is all business, but was never rude, which is what I prefer when someone is opening up my daughters back. I love him for the great job he did and would highly recommend him.
My daughter's appt with Dr. Ward was short and sweet. he reviewed my daughter's ultrasound and did an assessment on her. Afterwards he explained his findings and recommendations. He followed up with if I had any questions. Being in the medical field myself I understood the results and did not have any other concerns. Prior seeing Dr. Ward I researched him and found him to be the best candidate for my daughter's diagnosis. I am overallhappy with his care and would recommend him to anyone.

I felt confident that the care provider was knowledgeable about my child and next steps, but he did not have a good "bedside" manner. I could best describe it as indifferent and a little grumpy. He did not make eye contact with my child or talk with him. He was abrupt and matter of fact with us. It may be due to him feeling that we were an easy in and out visit, but I expected more from him if his goal is to go above and beyond.
the dr seemed rushed and matter of fact. being told your daughter needs to be braced was emotional for us and his bed side manner wasn't great... while I understand he deals with this everyday... it was new to us

Was not happy with Docs bedside manner. My Granddaughter was in a lot of pain. when we came into ER they said they would give her pain medicine. she never got any help with pain til early morning, Tylenol. the surgery didn't happen until I said her fingers were numb. They got her down and ready for surgery within minutes
I was told to see a pediatric orthopedic dr after my son was seen at a med express after being hit on his elbow by a baseball. Xray showed no fracture, but just to be dure have him seen. When seen bt Dr Ward, he seemed irritated we were there. Did not seem to have any tolerance for someone with no fracture. Saw us for 2 min. Probably charged my insurance $200. Big waste of time (45 min drive).
dr ward was very defensive during my visit. I have new back pain following a major surgery 5 years ago. he didn't care to address my pain. He stated that my PCP didn't know "what he was doing" when he ordered a CT scan of my back and then after looking at the scan, I think he realized he needed to view it. he did not offer any suggestions for pain and made excuses as to why another surgery wouldn't help. he did eventually order a lumbar injection but did not direct his office staff to help me set it up. it took me 45 minutes of calling 7 different places to figure out how to set up that appointment. if surgery isn't an option, I would have appreciated a more detailed explanation as to why and a suggestions to help control the pain.
It was very confusing trying to determine where we were supposed to be. Nothing said orthopedics. We attempted several times to use the self registration tool and it would not recognize my daughter's information. While I am sure the doctor she saw is very good at what he does, he basically made us feel like we really didn't need to see him. She has very slight scoliosis and he diminished the need for the visit.
Dr did not even exam my child. He never once touched him or looked at him. He didn't check the cast, cap refill ext. never looked for rubbing of the cast or even ask if we had any questions. We drove 3 hours and waited over an hour for 3 min with the Dr to not even examine our child!! Very scary and disappointing! Staff were short with us. No one was friendly!
Dr Ward and his staff are EXCELLENT!!!!! They took us right in for x-rays and then immediately into a room. Dr. Ward was in the room with us a minute after we got in there. There was no wait time, everything moves quickly so you are not stuck at the doctor all day. Dr. Ward explains everything easily to understand. Him and his nurse came in to fit him for a brace and she was excellent as well. From start to finish, we weren't even there for a half hour. That is awesome especially with an 18 month old son!

Dr. Ward was overall excellent. He seemed a little rushed though. Jacob was not a high risk type of patient and didn't need a lot of attention. Although our need was a "read an xray, give a report" meeting, Dr. Ward seemed distracted. Maybe he was just having a super busy day and didn't have time to transition from one patient to the next fully?? It wasn't a big deal, but you asked.
We were seen promptly. Our concerns were addressed. Appropriate measures to ensure recuperation were taken.
The doctor talked over me, didn't seem to have the time for me to tell him and first off said you do not need back surgery, and seemed to be "angry" about it. I don't want back surgery, told him if he told me i needed it i would have gotten a 2nd and 3rd opinion. I didn't want to make myself worse and i wanted to know what was wrong, i know now what is causing my spasms. It seemed to me that the doctor thought i was a waste of his time. I would not recommend anyone to him.
Wait time was way too long . Appointment was at 2pm, did not get back into exam room until after 3. Did not see dr until after 3 30. Unacceptable and disrespectful to me and my child. I signed her in at kiosk per staff request. Was told her sticker didnt print and she got lost in the shuffle. We should have been put AHEAD of everyone else due to YOUR error. Dr spent 5 whole minutes with us. Bearly even looked at my childs arm. I understand its probably his 10000 broken arm , Its our first. Please remember that

doctor seemed rushed and kept holding onto the door trying to leave exam room while I was still asking follow-up questions. doctor ordered tests that had already been performed and were in the medical record that doctor failed to look at or listen to my concerns that tests were already performed. ordered MRI regardless. doctor summarily dismissed the X-rays and medical records I brought with me to the appointment. complete waste of my insurance $ ... made to feel like my child was just a paycheck from the insurance company.

This visit was a check-up to check our daughter's growth after hip dysplasia surgery. Dr. Ward has been amazing and I would recommend him to anyone with a child needing orthopedic care.

I was nervous to come in the office after reading so many negative reviews on a doctor, but my child really needs help. Dr Ward was very kind and answered all of my questions. His stall was also very kind. He was not able to help with my child's pain but was able to direct us as to where to go next and relieve us that her spine is not fractured or worse. So we are very thankful for the time he took with us.

Overall, we (and I stress "we" because my 9 year old daughter could very much tell the care was poor) left there feeling completely unsatisfied that she was treated as a person that mattered. It felt like we were bothering him and wasting his time. We are all busy people, with things to do. She needed a walking boot for a fracture and a physician's excuse from gym. I couldn't get that from the PCP and I couldn't get that from the ER. I will be sure never to bother this physician or this location ever again. We will not be returning for a follow up or ever returning with any of my 3 children again.
I appreciated the whole staff for helping us though a emotional scare. The Dr and his nurse were extremely helpful.
I understand the doc is a surgeon however with that said patients should be made aware when the doctor is running over an hour behind. I was pretty well snapped and toldit's to be expected, however when patients are driving an hr to see this provider we need to be in the loop. I also felt it was unnecessary that the doctor moved my daughter's arm around knowing it was broken and we had questionable X-rays from quick care and they never repeated the X-rays. I felt he spoke down to us. I will never see him again and will refer all friends and family else where.
I felt Dr. Ward could have directed his conversation toward my son since he is 15 (almost 16). Also show some warmth & caring. Dr. Ward was knowledgeable & did answer questions.

We drove over an hour for this appointment. Not only was he 20+ minutes late, he one spent two minutes with my daughter. So we drove over an hour for a late appointment with a doctor that did not spend any time with my child and seemed bothered that he even had to come into the room. I will not have his see my children again! And if my child continues to have this problem, he did not seem to even care to find out what may be wrong!
The care my son had was world class and a credit to UPMC.
Dr. Ward was very rushed in his visit with us, and did not have a very good "bedside manor". When we asked him questions about our child's development that had been stressed as important by the Pediatrician, he completely disregarded our concerns. He also provided no solid suggestions or advise when we asked about how to do normal infant care (diaper changes, bathing, breastfeeding) and responded with a "You'll figure it out". He came off as extremely egotistical, and that his opinions/care trumped all other Medical Professional's previous opinions. We do feel confident in his ability to care for our daughter, but he is not a Dr I would recommend to other parents facing similar issues due to his lack of bedside tact.
Very friendly staff, and excellent doctor!
dr ward was extremely rude. we waited for more than 45 minutes after we had an X-ray. he walked in 1.5 hrs after our appointment, pulled up an X-ray, said everything is in place and tried to walk out of the room. I stopped him and asked a few questions. He answered quickly as if I was bothering him. he never once looked, touched or asked about my child. I found him very ignorant.
the only thing me and my wife didn't really like it was the wait time. Our appointment was scheduled at 1:20pm she had her sonogram done around 2:00pm but then we were seen by the doctor after 4:00pm.
Dr Ward is excellent. You do not wait in the room, he was in very promptly. He did not waste my time. He did the exam, looked at the x-ray. Explained everything to me so I could understand. Quick appointment. Esp after being at work all day its nice to have a quick appointment and not be there for hours. Couldn't ask for anything more!!
We visted the ED twice in 1 week on the same issue. I contacted the office via central scheduling 3x's to discuss my concerns and never received a call back. My daughter was misdiagnosed in the ER and casted for a sprain which was explained to me after she had already been in a cast for 3 weeks. However, the MD was very respectful and kind - he didn't explain why she was misdiagnosed so many times but provided us with information going forward. I was satisfied with this.

Dr. Ward is very nice and knowledgable. He explained several things to us and my child and we feel confident with his care.
I just assumed coming to a children's hospital that the Dr would have been more engaging and child friendly. He seemed cold, strict and never explained things to our face, he was looking at the computer most of the time. He also examined my son in about 2 seconds and that was it.
The doctor was very arrogant and dismissive of both my daughter's and my comments and concerns. He had no bedside manner and took 2 minutes to 'examine' her physically and spent the rest of the time looking at the computer to view x-rays and MRI. When we asked for options for her pain and solutions, he again was very dismissive of her pain and seemed to appear that he did not believe her pain was as real as it is. I am thoroughly disappointed that he is a physician at Children's Hospital and a representative of the medical community at that organization. While he may be a skilled and knowledgeable physician, he is a miserable person to deal with regarding the health of a child. I hope this feedback will have some impact on your management and/or evaluation of him as a physician at your hospital.
tried to get rid of me quickly after waiting 3 hours!!! to see him
my son has had a diagnosis since birth and went through years of thearpy to overcome his challenges. While only one notice symptom is still there the doctor disagreed with the diagnosis after seeing my son for only 3 minutes and not knowing full medical history. So he tells him that, that is not what he has he has something else!!!
1) the child is 12... the doctor did not address him directly or ask if he had questions. My child is old enough to ask him his perspective 2) the doctor did not ask me if I had any concerns or worries that he could address as best as could right now. Child's long term prognosis was not addressed. 3) I felt not exactly rushed, but not exactly nurtured.
We've spent and continue to spend a lot of time at Children's with our six year old son. Our appointment with Dr. Ward was by far the worst experience that we've had there. We waited over an hour of our scheduled appointment time to be seen by Dr. Ward. Upon his arrival he was extremely rude, made my husband and I feel that the concerns and questions we asked were stupid and overall seemed rush. The Ortho Dr. that our son saw in the ER on Thursday casted his foot at an angle. Dr. Ward wanted it re-done. The 1st medical assistant that cut/re-did our son's cast re-did it the same way that the Ortho Dr. did it and we had to wait for it to set so that they could cut it off and redo it again. I called the next day (and am waiting on a call back) to switch to another doctor for our son's follow up appointment November 15th. I wouldn't recommend Dr. Ward to anyone.
