Educator Development Workshops and Resources

A majority of faculty in the Department of Pediatrics are involved in teaching medical students, residents, fellows, faculty and colleagues. To support this teaching mission, the Office of Faculty Development provides educator development CME workshops throughout the year. OFD can also arrange for individual consultation to those interested in conducting education research or quality improvement activities.

Faculty who wish to take a “deeper dive” into the science of education, further develop their own expertise in medical education and serve as a resource for colleagues can apply for the OFD Education Champion Program.

OFD Education Champion Program

The OFD Education Champions program is designed to invigorate & advance the quality of educator development & the impact of teaching and educational scholarship in the Department of Pediatrics and the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. Faculty members who have educational leadership positions (GME program leadership, medical student clerkship director, elective rotation director, etc.) or who aim to have educational scholarship as a major component of their academic career should strongly consider participating in this program.

The OFD Education Champions Program consists of annual cohorts of 10-12 faculty who engage in the following activities:

  1. Ten, 1-hour long, small group sessions over 6-9 months, focused on the science of teaching and learning and clinician-educator professional development
  2. Individualized, peer-observation of teaching sessions in a range of clinical settings, with direct feedback
  3. Educational project development, including preparation for presentation and dissemination

Faculty members must complete an application form and be nominated by their Division Chiefs or Department Directors. Nominations from community faculty and those with appointments in departments other than Pediatrics are also welcome. Annual requests for applications and nominations are distributed through faculty email.
