Joe Suyama, MD
Adult Medical Director, Telephone Triage & Advice Center
Joe Suyama, MD, is an associate professor with the University of Pittsburgh Department of Emergency Medicine. He currently serves as the chief of Emergency Services for Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC’s Emergency Department and as the medical director of UPMC Urgent Care at Shadyside. Dr. Suyama also serves as the medical branch director for the Corporate Emergency Coordination Center. Dr. Suyama performs research on the health and safety of first responders as the medical director for the Emergency Responder Human Performance Laboratory.
Within the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Dr. Suyama has encouraged the growth and implementation of disaster training and education for medical students by coordinating and establishing courses dealing with emerging infectious diseases, the medical consequences of complex emergencies, hospital pandemic response, Basic Disaster Life Support, and advanced clinical skills for disaster response. Dr. Suyama recently served as co-chair of the UPMC Pandemic Flu Task Force, and assisted in its preparedness and response efforts to confront the medical consequences of the 2009 H1N1 pandemic.
William Varley, MD

William Varley, MD, the pediatric medical director of the Children’s Hospital Telephone Triage & Advice Center, is a practicing pediatrician in Monroeville. He is a graduate of The University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and completed his residency at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. He serves on the Board of Directors of Children’s Community Pediatrics and is the medical director of Children’s Express Care–Monroeville. Dr. Varley has been involved with the Telephone Triage & Advice Center since its inception in February 1996.
The Telephone Triage & Advice Center is composed of 20 registered nurses, a manager, and an administrative assistant. The center’s employee retention rate is better than 85 percent.
