Children's Hospital is part of the UPMC family.
Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC has earned the distinguished Magnet® Recognition once again, granted by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and achieved by 8 percent of hospitals nationwide.
ANCC’s Magnet Recognition Program® recognizes health care organizations for quality patient care, nursing excellence, and innovations in professional nursing practice. Of more than 6,300 health care organizations nationwide, only 468 have achieved Magnet designation status. Other UPMC Hospitals with the coveted Magnet designation include UPMC Hamot, UPMC Passavant, UPMC Shadyside and UPMC St. Margaret.
Children’s Hospital first achieved Magnet designation in July 2012 and currently is one of 30 Magnet-designated hospitals in the state. In addition, Children’s is one of only 37 pediatric hospitals nationwide who have earned this recognition.
To maintain designation, organizations must reapply every four years. Children’s joins the ranks of only 6 percent of U.S. hospitals that have achieved Magnet re-designation — a process as rigorous as achieving initial designation.
“We are extremely honored to be recognized again as a Magnet hospital, which affirms the fact that we are providing an outstanding level of nursing excellence each and every day at Children’s," said Diane Hupp, D.N.P., R.N., N.E.A.-B.C., chief nursing officer at Children’s. “Earning this again speaks volumes about our unified team effort and the true dedication we have to provide the very best care to our patients and families.”
On July 20, 2017, with hundreds of nurses, physicians and other staff looking on in the hospital’s Eat’n Park Atrium, Hupp was notified during a conference call with Magnet officials that Children’s approval was unanimous.
The Magnet model is designed to provide a framework for nursing practice, research, and measurement of outcomes. Through this framework, ANCC can assess applicants across a number of components and dimensions to gauge an organization’s nursing excellence. The foundation of this model is composed of various elements deemed essential to delivering superior patient care. These include the quality of nursing leadership and coordination and collaboration across specialties, as well as processes for measuring and improving the quality and delivery of care.
