Children's Hospital is part of the UPMC family.
Heart failure afflicts thousands of children and adolescents each year – unexpectedly and often undetected until its progression is so advanced that the child’s life is endangered. However, when pediatric heart failure is identified early and treated with the proper intervention, patients can avoid the tragic consequences, recover and go on to lead normal lives.
The Heart Institute at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC is a leader in treating children with heart failure and has a Heart Failure and Recovery Program with a dedicated Cardiomyopathy Clinic to help pediatric patients and their families on both an inpatient and outpatient basis.
In cases of heart failure, Children’s is a leader in the use of mechanical circulatory support devices, which often serve as a bridge to heart transplant. But Children’s experts have also pioneered the use of these devices to provide relief to the failing heart, allowing the heart to rest and the body and heart to recover, thus avoiding transplant in some cases. Children’s also offers highly specialized service for transporting children with failing hearts while on circulatory support devices.
Along with Children’s groundbreaking basic and clinical research into heart disease and heart failure, our researchers are also aggressively pursuing the development of ultra-small heart pumps designed specifically for pediatric cases.
When it comes to pediatric heart failure, Children’s Hospital offers experience, expertise, and the most complete range of treatment options available anywhere. Treatment may include:
The multidisciplinary team assigned to patients with heart failure includes dedicated cardiologists specialized in the management of heart failure and who are current in the latest techniques for management of the condition. The team may also include cardiothoracic surgeons, transplant coordinators, cardiac nurses and genetic counselors, who can review family history, role of heredity and assist with assessments from pre-born to adult years.
