About Our Pulmonary and Allergy Research

Finding new ways to treat and prevent lung disease in children and adults

At the Specialized Center of Clinically Oriented Research (SCCOR) in Pediatric and Adult Pulmonology, our researchers are seeking to learn:

  • How and why aspergillus causes symptoms in only some cystic fibrosis and asthma patients, but not in most patients exposed to the fungus.
  • How a patient’s immune system responds to the aspergillus fungus and the role of certain molecules that may influence the immune response.
  • New ways to improve the diagnosis and treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis by searching for biomarkers that will provide insight into the severity and progression of the disease.
  • About the molecular mechanisms involved in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and the role of growth factors with the hope of finding new treatments for the disease.

Building a pipeline of new treatments for food allergies in children

Children's Hospital is a Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) Center of Excellence and founding member of the FARE Clinical Network.

FARE chose Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC and 21 others from across the nation, based on each hospital's standards of care for food allergy patients and leadership in applying new evidence-based practices.

As members of the FARE Clinical Network, the 22 Centers of Excellence will:

  • Become major sites for clinical food allergy research.
  • Build a "robust pipeline of new therapies" for children with food allergies.
  • Develop a national registry and biorepositories of food allergy patients.
