Children's Hospital is part of the UPMC family.
The objective of this study is to assess two common methods of pain management for laparoscopic cholecystectomy (gall bladder removal): paravertebral nerve blocks versus the administration of a local anesthetic directly at the surgical sites. A paravertebral nerve block is a procedure during which a local anesthetic is injected near a nerve by the spine for temporary control of pain. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy requires only small surgical incisions but requires postoperative pain management. This study, which is exclusive to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, will help researchers determine which method of pain management is best for this procedure.
Subject to certain exclusions, this study is open to patients of both genders, ages 8 to 17, who are pediatric patients scheduled for elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy under general anesthesia.
Males: Age 8 to 17
Females: Age 8 to 17
Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups. One group will receive the paravertebral nerve blocks and a placebo injection at the incision sites. The other will receive a placebo at paravertebral space and a local anesthetic injection at the incision sites. All participants will receive pain medication at one site or the other while they are under general anesthesia, and neither the patient, the anesthesiologist nor the surgeon will know which type of pain management is being used. During the 24-hour postoperative period, researchers will follow-up with participants to assess their pain management.
Visits: Requires hospitalization for surgery
Duration: 24 hours after surgery
