This study builds upon a prior investigation for determining the usefulness of the Clinical Assessment Score-15 (CAS-15) in diagnosing sleep apnea in children. CAS-15 comprises a questionnaire about a child’s sleeping and breathing behaviors and an examination in which a doctor reviews specific physical characteristics. It is thought to accurately predict the results that can be obtained through overnight sleep studies, which are more costly and are not always available. Outcomes can help in determining whether removal of tonsils and adenoids may help in treating sleep apnea.
Subject to exclusion criteria, the study is accepting children of both genders, ages 2 to 12, who are being seen for problems related to sleeping.
Males and Females: Ages 2 to 12
Parents will answer questions related to nighttime sleeping behaviors, such as snoring, gasping or pauses in breathing, and daytime behaviors, such as runny nose and mouth breathing. Physicians will look for specific characteristics related to the voice quality, the height of the hard palate and tonsil size. A repeat CAS-15 will be done 6 to 12 weeks after the first visit or tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy.
Visits: None beyond normal clinical care for this condition
Duration: Up to 4 months for follow up
