Children’s Wants All Kids to be a Hard Head
Kids – wear a helmet every time you’re on wheels!
This summer, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and Kohl’s department stores are pleased to launch "Hard Heads," a community-based program to educate children of all ages on the importance of wearing a helmet correctly, and at all times, while riding anything on wheels.
Hard Head Patrol
Throughout the summer, Children’s employees and medical staff will patrol their neighborhoods to raise awareness about helmet safety.
- If they identify a child who is wearing a helmet, that child will be rewarded with a coupon for a free lunch at Wendy’s. If the helmet is worn incorrectly,
CHP staff will make adjustments. - Children who are spotted without a helmet will be given a coupon for a free helmet and fitting that can be redeemed at various community locations including Children’s Hospital satellites on select days. Check the Hard Head Helmet Fitting Schedule for locations, dates and times.
Kids stopped by a member of our Hard Head Patrol will automatically become a Hard Head – indicating they understand the importance of helmet safety and wish to be injury-free.
Wearing a Helmet Can Save Lives
Brain injuries are often life-threatening and life-changing, yet only 20 percent of children admitted to CHP for bike injuries were wearing helmets when the injury occurred. By doing so, more than 85 percent of all head injuries could be prevented. It is our mission to help parents and children learn that the simple act of wearing a helmet can save lives.

Parents, please note: Local authorities are aware of this program and all volunteers are required to display their Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh ID badge and Hard Head button at all times.
