She joined Childrens Hospital in 2002, following seven years as assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Miami School of Medicine in Florida. Dr. Ameen holds undergraduate degrees in biochemistry from Rutgers University and in pharmacy from Mercer University. She earned her medical degree from the University of the West Indies in 1985.

Understanding the role of protein traffic and the cystic fibrosis gene product CFTR in the pathogenesis of secretory diarrhea is the focus of Dr. Ameens research. CFTR plays a critical role in regulating chloride and fluid secretion in the intestine and up-regulation of CFTR function is implicated in the pathogenesis of secretory diarrhea due to biologic agents such as cholera. Her work has earned several awards, including the Young Investigator Award, Industry Research Scholar AwardGastroenterology, NIH-sponsored Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award, and a Research Advisory Committee Award, Childrens Hospital of Pittsburgh.
