In addition to seeing patients in general Child Neurology, Gulay
Alper, MD, sees patients in the White Matter Disorders, Neurofibromatosis
and Tuberous Sclerosis clinics at Childrens in Oakland and
Childrens East in Monroeville.
She completed her Pediatrics residency in her native Turkey, where
she was a general practitioner for the Ministry of Health for four
years in the cities of Erzurum and Diyarbakir. She came to Childrens
for additional training in Pediatrics and Child Neurology residency.
Dr. Alper joined the Child Neurology faculty in July 2002 after
a research fellowship in Neurogenetics in the Childrens laboratory
of Vinodh Narayanan, MD.
Dr. Alper has begun a research project designed to determine the
frequency with which children get multiple sclerosis and related
conditions that involve the white matter of the brain. Her studies
will help us understand what happens to children with these diseases
as they mature, and begin to tell us what treatment and prevention
options work best.
