Biographical Summary

Thaschawee (Tash) Arkachaisri, MD, FACR, is a pediatric rheumatologist in the Division of Pediatric Rheumatology at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh who joined the division in 2003. Dr. Arkachaisri brings with him a reputation for excellence in treating children with rheumatic diseases and in educating medical students, residents and fellows to work in the field. In addition to his clinical duties and research, he is an assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

Dr. Arkachaisri, a native of Thailand, earned his medical degree with first class honors in 1991 from Mahidol University in Bangkok. He completed his pediatric internship and residency at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. His interest in immunology took him to Children's Hospital of Buffalo (now Women & Children's Hospital of Buffalo), and the School of Medicine and Biomedical Science at the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he completed his fellowship training in allergy and clinical immunology in 1998. From 1998 to 2000, Dr. Arkachaisri served as a clinical fellow in pediatric rheumatology at the Hospital for Special Surgery at Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York. He was recruited to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh from Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok, where he was chief of the Division of Pediatric Rheumatology, an attending physician in the Division of Allergy and Immunology, and a member of the faculty of medicine at Mahidol University.

The study of childhood systemic sclerosis, localized scleroderma (morphea, linear scleroderma) and Raynaud's phenomenon are among Dr. Arkachaisri's research interests. Ongoing studies include investigating autoantibodies in childhood scleroderma and trying to identify disease biomarkers and outcome measurements for localized scleroderma, systemic sclerosis and Raynaud's phenomenon that will lead to better ways to monitor and treat these diseases in children.

Dr. Arkachaisri has published articles in numerous medical journals and publications. He is a Fellow in the American College of Rheumatology and a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Medical Council of Thailand, Thai Rheumatism Association and the Pediatric Association of Thailand. Dr. Arkachaisri is board-certified in pediatrics, pediatric rheumatology, and allergy and immunology.
