Bradley B. Keller, MD, is an accomplished clinical cardiologist, scientist,
administrator and educator. Since joining Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh's
Division of Pediatric Cardiology in 2002, he has directed an expansion
of the clinical pediatric cardiovascular program while broadening his
investigation of the physiology and biomechanics of developing cardiovascular
systems to include several complementary areas of research.
Under Dr. Keller's leadership, the region's first dedicated Pediatric
Cardiac Intensive Care Unit was established in 2003, and many facets of
the clinical pediatric cardiovascular program have been restructured or
expanded, including pediatric echocardiography services, pediatric cardiac
catheterization services and ambulatory pediatric cardiology services.
As a scientist, Dr. Keller has long been interested in defining the biomechanics
of developing cardiovascular systems. His laboratory pioneered the analysis
of cardiovascular function in the embryo using pressure, flow and dimension
analysis and is collaborating with faculty members in the University of
Pittsburgh departments of Cell Biology and Physiology, Bioengineering,
Surgery and Orthopedics, the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine
and Magee-Womens Research Institute. Developing novel technologies, another
long-standing interest of Dr. Keller's, has led to additional areas of
investigation. For example, under the leadership of Dr. Harvey Borovetz,
Dr. Keller is the principle investigator of the Children's Hospital subcontract
for developing the first implantable artificial heart for infants. His
research also includes developing novel hardware and software for prenatal
cardiac intervention. In collaboration with faculty at the Carnegie Mellon
University Robotics Institute, Dr. Keller is working to develop novel
image and positioning technology for fetal cardiovascular intervention
as part of an academic-industry partnership with CASurgica, Inc.
Dr. Keller earned a bachelor's degree in biology at the University of
Pennsylvania in 1981 and earned his medical degree at the Pennsylvania
State University School of Medicine four years later. His pediatric internship
and residency was completed at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and he completed
a clinical and research pediatric cardiology fellowship at the University
of Rochester, where he served on the Department of Pediatrics faculty
from 1991 to 1998. Immediately prior to joining Children's Hospital of
Pittsburgh, Dr. Keller was on the faculty of the University of Kentucky,
where he served as chief of the Division of Pediatric Cardiology from
1998-2002.
As an educator, Dr. Keller's appointments have included associate professor
of pediatrics at the University of Rochester and professor with tenure
at the University of Kentucky Department of Pediatrics. At the University
of Pittsburgh, he is a visiting professor in the Department of Pediatrics,
member of the Department of Cell Biology and Molecular Physiology graduate
faculty, a member of the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine and
a research associate at the Magee-Womens Research Institute.
Dr. Keller is the senior author or co-author of more than 50 peer-reviewed
manuscripts, scientific reviews, and book chapters. He serves as a national
and international peer-reviewer for the American Heart Association, the
National Institute of Health, the National Science Foundation, the Department
of Defense and the Dutch Heart Foundation. He is a member of more than
a dozen professional and scientific societies and has received numerous
honors throughout his career, including the 2004 Patient Satisfaction
Award for Outstanding Achievement in Patient Care at Children's Hospital
of Pittsburgh.
