Epilepsy Center

The Neurosurgery Department plays an integral role in the treatment and care of children with intractable epilepsy through the Epilepsy Center at Children’s Hospital.

The Epilepsy Center is a joint effort of Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh Epilepsy Center. Together, a multidisciplinary team of medical professionals from the Departments of Neurosurgery, Neurology, Neuro-Radiology, Nuclear Medicine and Neurophysiology provide high quality care for children with all types of seizures and seizure disorders.

In addition, Children’s Epilepsy Center is the only center in the region able to provide comprehensive evaluation and surgical treatment options for children with intractable epilepsy. The Epilepsy Center has state-of-the-art neuro-imaging resources, including the latest generation MRI scanners, single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), positron emission tomography (PET), magnetic resonance spectroscopy and digital video electroencephalography (EEG) monitoring suites. With these resources, Children’s neurosurgeons can identify the specific site in the brain that is functioning abnormally and causing seizures, determine its relationship to the brain’s cortex and then excise it.

The goal of the Epilepsy Center at Children’s Hospital is to improve the quality of life for children with epilepsy and other seizure disorders and to enable them to develop to their fullest potential. Following an evaluation by staff in the Epilepsy Center, the entire team meets to discuss each child’s condition and treatment options.
