How You Can Help

Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh has provided a vital service to our surrounding community for more than 100 years. This service has been built on excellent patient care, strong academic leadership and ground-breaking research. But the driving force behind our mission is great compassion — compassion that we share with the community we serve.

From directing a United Way contribution to the Heart Center to hosting an annual picnic for the Heart to Heart support group, there are many ways to continue giving to children with heart disease. We are forever grateful to the many donors who have given so generously over the years, and we know that our patients and their families will benefit greatly by your continued support.

Book Benefits the Heart Center

Pittsburgh’s Leslie Wilk Braksick, PhD, is the author of Unlock Behavior, Unleash Profits, a business management and leadership book published in January 2000 by McGraw-Hill. Dr. Braksick is donating all royalties from the sale of Unlock Behavior, Unleash Profits to the Heart Center at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, for a special reason. On Christmas Eve 1996, Dr. Braksick gave birth to Sydney Leigh Braksick. Although her daughter had the normal beauty and intelligence of any new life on earth, her malformed heart and brain stem gave her an all-too-brief life of just 32 days, all of which were spent in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Children’s Hospital.

Dr. Braksick and her family have been profoundly impacted by the brief life that was Sydney Leigh’s. Through the tremendously difficult and uncertain road they traveled during those 32 days and after, Dr. Braksick comments that the physicians, nurses and staff of Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh demonstrated medical excellence, personal compassion and a respect that transcended all decisions and difficulties. In addition to her donation of the book’s royalties, Dr. Braksick actively encourages individual and corporate gifts to the Heart Center from readers of her book.
