Echocardiography Laboratory

The Echocardiography Laboratory at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh is a high-volume clinical laboratory equipped with innovative diagnostic equipment. The laboratory is staffed by highly trained technicians and physicians with extensive expertise in pediatric imaging and Doppler evaluation.

Approximately 9,000 transthoracic and 400 transesophageal studies are performed each
year at Children’s Hospital, and almost 900 fetal echocardiograms are performed annually by Children’s physicians and technicians at Magee-Womens Hospital. Dobutamine stress echocardiography is also available at Children’s Hospital for patients suspected of having coronary artery problems. In addition, with the creation of the Children’s Hospital Telemedicine Network, children who are born at or who live near one of Children’s regional outpatient locations throughout western Pennsylvania can have their echocardiograms performed there and simultaneously reviewed and interpreted by Children’s Hospital physicians in the echocardiography lab.

The Echocardiography Laboratory staff are highly skilled and trained. Their expertise, combined with the wide variety and large number of studies performed in the lab, ensures that they are also extremely experienced in echocardiographic diagnosis.

The Echocardiography Laboratory is committed to the education of physicians, technicians and students throughout western Pennsylvania. The training program includes a weekly diagnostic lecture and bi-weekly practical sessions during which echocardiographic techniques and cardiac anatomy are discussed in detail.
