Description of ServicesThe Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery cares for children and young adults with diseases or injuries of the brain or spinal cord. The division provides comprehensive initial evaluation to children of all ages with suspected disease of the central nervous system. All patients are examined within two weeks of the request. The division also provides regular outpatient evaluation of children who have been admitted to the Neurosurgery service. The rehabilitation team provides comprehensive neurosurgical care, ongoing diagnostic assessment and follow-up. In addition to providing the full spectrum of general neurosurgical care, the division incorporates the following specialty programs: The Neuro-Oncology Program provides comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for patients with brain and spinal cord tumors, working closely with the oncology and radiation therapy programs. The Spasticity and Movement Disorders Clinic sees patients who are possible candidates for:
The clinic evaluates and treats children with a wide variety of movement disorders, including spasticity, dystonia, athetosis, chorea and tremor. This multidisciplinary clinic includes neurosurgeons, psychiatrists, physical and occupational therapists, orthopaedic surgeons and social workers. The clinic accepts pediatric and young adult patients. The Surgical Epilepsy Program works closely with the Division of Child Neurology to provide comprehensive care for children with seizure disorders, incorporating innovative approaches for evaluation and management. In addition, the division has multidisciplinary programs for children with craniofacial disorders, peripheral nerve and brachial plexus injuries and spinal malformations. Referral RequirementsReferrals are required from primary care physicians or other Childrens Hospital specialty services. Referrals for patients enrolled in managed care insurance plans also may require authorization from the insurance provider and primary care physician. All necessary referral and authorization forms must be received before the patients visit.
