Description of Services

The Pulmonology Laboratory evaluates the pathophysiology of the lung and respiratory system. Complete pulmonary function tests are available for inpatients and outpatients 6 years of age and older. Induction oscillometry, a test of airway resistance and response to bronchodilator, can now be performed on patients as young as 2 years of age, as well as on patients with neuromuscular weakness unable to complete spirometry. Pulmonary function testing can also be performed at Children’s North, South and East at select times (please call to arrange). Select tests, including studies to assess upper airway function and the regulatory mechanism of breathing, can be performed in infants and young children. In addition, extensive lung function tests can be performed in infants and children with a tracheostomy or those on mechanical ventilation in intensive care settings.

Referral Requirements

No referral is required for spirometry, although a prescription is helpful so that our technicians can obtain the proper test. Referrals for patients enrolled in managed care insurance plans also may require authorization from the insurance provider and primary care physician. All necessary referral and authorization forms must be received before the patient’s visit. For accurate provider numbers or more information, please call the office number listed.
