Rheumatologists at Children’s Develop New Thermal and 3-dimensional Imaging Technology to Aide in Diagnosis and Treatment of Arthritis
Raphael Hirsch, MD, has led a collaboration between Children’s Hospital, Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh to develop new imaging technology that provides a thermal, 3-dimensional image of an arthritic joint. These images, which can be taken in an office setting within a matter of seconds, have the potential to help rheumatologists make a more timely diagnosis and determine the effectiveness of various medical treatments.
Based on this technology, a new company, Arthritis Imaging, has been launched with the assistance of Pittsburgh Life Sciences Greenhouse. Additionally, Children’s and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine are conducting a clinical trial and plan to enroll between 30 and 40 pediatric and adult patients.
Raphael Hirsch, MD, chief of Rheumatology at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, has been selected to hold the Aldo V. Londino Jr., MD, Endowed Chair in Pediatrics.
