Alcohol & Drug Prevention Program

Road Radio USA

The consequences of underage drinking remain a leading killer among America’s youth. Road Radio USA is a multimedia presentation developed especially for middle school students to encourage safe choices and to prevent the use of alcohol and drugs. For more than 10 years, Road Radio has reached student audiences in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New York.

Road Radio founder Jim Mothersbaugh stars in this performance telling firsthand about his own tragic experience with drinking and driving. When Jim was a senior in high school, he and three friends were involved in a drinking and driving car crash that killed one friend and left Jim in a coma and paralyzed by a broken back. After a miraculous recovery, Jim decided to create Road Radio where he uses lights, music and videos to “mix the music with the message.” This format enhances middle-schoolers' receptivity and drives home powerful messages about the consequences of alcohol and drug use.

Road Radio USA, in collaboration with Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, will appear throughout western Pennsylvania during the 2009–10 school year. Funding is provided through the generosity of Edgar Snyder & Associates.
