Research Interests

Adolescent and Young Adult Oncology (AYA) Program
Dr. Shaw has established one of the few Adolescent and Young Adult Oncology (AYA) Oncology Programs in the United States at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. Through this program he studies barriers to providing the best care to this unique population of cancer patients.

Fertility Preservation in Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant Patients
Dr. Shaw works closely with the Center for Fertility and Reproductive Endocrinology at Magee Women’s Hospital to study cutting-edge approaches to preserve fertility in patients whose curative therapy will adversely affect their ability to reproduce. He is the principal investigator for an IRB-approved protocol to freeze ovarian tissue and co-investigator for an IRB-approved protocol to freeze testicular tissue prior to chemotherapy and/or radiation for appropriate patients.

IRB-approved Bleeding Registry
Dr. Shaw is also interested in the prevalence of true bleeding disorders among children referred for bleeding. An IRB-approved bleeding registry has been established to study this question.
