Biography Summary
Peter Wearden, MD, PhD, is a congenital cardiothoracic surgeon at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC.
Dr. Wearden currently is spearheading two National Institutes of Health-funded projects to develop an internal and external ventricular assist device (VAD) for young children. VADs are mechanical devices that take over the pumping action of the heart and offer lifesaving support, most often acting as a bridge to keep patients alive until a donor heart becomes available for transplantation. It is estimated that as many as 1,000 children annually may benefit from these technologies.
Previously, Dr. Wearden served as chief clinician fellow in pediatric cardiac surgery at The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto. In addition to his medical degree, Dr. Wearden has a doctorate in pharmacology and toxicology from West Virginia University. Recently, Dr. Wearden was director of surgery for preclinical testing at the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine.
