Biography Summary

Gary A. Silverman, MD, PhD, joined Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC in 2004 as chief of the UPMC Newborn Medicine Program. He also is a professor of pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

In Pittsburgh, Dr. Silverman's clinical duties include oversight of the medical care provided to high-risk newborns admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Units at Children's Hospital and Magee-Womens Hospital, as well as other critically ill newborns in the region. He also directs the division's basic and clinical research programs and medical education and teaching in the field of neonatology.

Previously, Dr. Silverman was chief of newborn medicine at Children's Hospital Boston, associate professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and director of the Harvard-Wide Neonatal-Perinatal Fellowship Program.

Dr. Silverman received his bachelor's degree from Washington and Jefferson College, Washington, Pa. He received his doctorate in immunology/pathology from the University of Chicago and his medical degree from the Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago. He completed his residency at Children's Hospital Boston and his fellowship in the Department of Newborn Medicine, St. Louis Children's Hospital, Washington University School of Medicine in Missouri. He also was a postdoctoral research fellow at Washington University School of Medicine.

In addition to managing the research efforts within the Newborn Medicine Program, Dr. Silverman will continue to conduct his own studies on a family of proteins called serpins, which are proteins that protect cells from injury. Among Dr. Silverman's current projects is the investigation of how serpins work in normal development as well as the role they play in certain cancers and infections.
