Radiation Oncology
Description of Services
The Pediatric Radiation Oncology Department at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC is part of the comprehensive cancer care available to infants, children and teens. Specialized treatment plans are tailored to each patient’s physical and emotional needs using therapies and procedures specific to particular cancers.
Advanced radiation therapies include:
- Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
Three-dimensional CT images are used to determine the shape of the tumor, allowing therapists to deliver radiation more precisely and spare healthy tissue surrounding the tumor from treatment. - Image-Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT)
This state-of-the-art approach tracks changes to the tumor throughout all stages of treatment, allowing treatment modifications to be made as the disease reacts to the therapy. - Four-Dimensional Computed Tomography (4DCT)
This technology captures images of the movement of the body’s organs while breathing. These images show therapists how tumors on or near organs are effected by the body’s movement.
The multi-disciplinary Radiation Oncology team works closely with patients and families to provide the most comprehensive treatment and supportive care possible.
