Neonatal Follow-Up Clinics

Newborn Follow-Up Clinic
The Newborn Follow-Up Clinic at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC and Magee Womens Hospital of UPMC cares for graduates of Neonatal Intensive Care Units who require apnea monitoring at discharge and for graduates who are at high risk for developmental concerns. Infants born weighing less than 1500 grams or who were less than 34 weeks' gestational age at birth are automatically enrolled in the Developmental Clinic. Neonates who develop neurological concerns, lung disease, or who have been exposed to drugs prenatally also receive developmental assessment. The clinic is staffed by a multidisciplinary team including neonatologists, registered nurses specializing in follow-up and development, neonatal psychologists, developmental specialists, social workers, and neonatal nutritionists.

The Neonatal Apnea Follow-Up Clinic
The Apnea Clinic assists primary care physicians in supervising the use of apnea monitors by reviewing the monitor downloads and determining when monitoring is no longer necessary. In addition, infants discharged home on supplemental oxygen therapy are followed in the Apnea Clinic until the supplemental oxygen is successfully discontinued. A report is sent to the primary care physician after the visit.

The Developmental Follow-Up Clinic
The Developmental Clinic provides neurodevelopmental assessments for high risk infants at 3 to 4 months, 9 to 12 months, 18 to 20 months, and 24 months corrected age. A detailed interview is conducted and the infant receives a comprehensive developmental evaluation. A report is provided to the family and the primary care physician after the visit.
