Pulmonary Function Laboratory

Description of Services

The Pulmonary Function Laboratory evaluates for proper functioning of the lung and respiratory system. A wide range of tests are available for both inpatients and outpatients. Pulmonary function testing may be requested by a pediatrician to evaluate symptoms such as coughing, wheezing or shortness of breath. Pulmonary function testing also is used to follow the course of some diseases, such as asthma and cystic fibrosis, once diagnosed, to monitor for possible treatment complications. In some cases, pulmonary function testing may be requested prior to surgery.

Some tests also can be performed at Children’s North, South and East at select times.

Referral Requirements

Referrals are required from primary care physicians or other Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC specialty services. Referrals for patients enrolled in managed care insurance plans also may require authorization from the insurance provider and primary care physician. All necessary referral and authorization forms must be received before the patient’s visit. For accurate provider numbers or more information, please call the office number listed.
